11.05.2016 Different forms of musical theatre (Forms) Questions: -Who are involved in the staging of musical theatre? -What are the different types of musical theatre? What we found out: In Indonesia there are different types of musIcal theatre. They performed It through Wayang or traditional dances. Wayang Is a puppet from Indonesia. They have different types of wayang such as Wayang Kulit, Wayang orang and Wayang Golek. Wayang Is made from water buffalo hide. Wayang Kulit Is performed by using the light and covering the wayang and they cover It with a cloth so we only can see the shadow of the wayang. Wayang Orang Is performed when people who dressed like wayang performed as If they are puppets. Wayang Golek is a 3D puppet. They didn't cover It like Wayang Kulit. Another type of musical theatre Is Ballad Opera, the first Ballad Opera was written by John Gay with his beautiful story of the Beggars Opera. Opera came from Italy at the end of the 16th century. Opera is when the actor is singing while saying the dialogue. Usually the actor sings In a high voice. In opera, they use musical instruments in an orchestra with the violin, cello, harp and other Instruments. Opera is popular amongst older people. Musical comedy Is a funny performance that makes everybody laugh. Musical comedy Is to entertain people who have a hard time laughing. Musical comedy Is fun for kids and fun for other people. Musical comedy was Invented by George Edwardes who Is also the manager of the Gaiety Theatre. He dressed his actors in the play In a very high fashioned designer dress. These plays such as The Shop Girl, The Circus Girl, The Girl In the Taxi, The Runaway Girl, The Cherry Girl, The Girl behind the Counter and The Pearl Girl needed so many girls in the performance. Broadway Is the one most common musical theatre performance that happens around the world. Broadway originally come from Manhattan, New York. Broadway Is mostly used to raise awareness about Issues currently happening around the world. The name "Broadway" come from the street In New York city. Kids really enjoy this kind of performance . There are people who are In charge on the stage. They all have one specific job. One of them are the actors. An actor Is the one who makes the play happen. They act and they sing sometimes. Then there is the lighting crew. They are the ones who gives the mood In the various scenes. Then there Is the costume designer. The costume designer Is the one who decides on the costumes for the actor. The director is the one who tells the actor what they should do and decides on how the performance Is to be presented. After a while, Annie was asked to spend a short time in a very big Mansion owned by Mr. Oliver Warbucks. After Ms. Hannigan and Rooster heard the news that Annie is looking for her parent, they dressed and acted as Annie's parent, but then Annie escaped before she was about to be killed and she was finally adopted by Mr. Oliver Warbucks. I chose this story because it is linked to our issue on Children Rights. As we could also see in that video above, that it is also a musical performance. The way we know it is because they sing, dance, act, and say dialogues.

What we found out : Function of theatre Theatrical performances is performed because it is a way people express themselves and in the old times they used to perform it while waiting for plants to harvest. It started off in ancient where they perform it as rituals connected to their beliefs. Traditional theatre There are different types of theatrical performances. Traditional theatre is performed for a reason. Every culture has their own way of performing theatre and their reasons. People perform Traditional theatre to tell children morals through storytelling. Musical comedy Musical comedy is a musical that's humorous and is age appropriate. Musical comedy was something new to this world. The first one was created by George M Cohen and it was very cultural. Opera theatre Opera is being performed with a group of people playing instruments. Opera has a mix of acting, singing and dancing therefore it delivers large information about the characters feelings and emotions which will be easy for the audience to understand. Opera is a performance that is music but they turn it to drama while singing so we can feel lots of emotions. Broadway Broadway is a theatrical performance that is complete. It has everything. Broadway was really succesful from when it first came out because it really attracted all of the audience and so new ones keep on coming and theyre always successful . |

How has musical theatre changed over time ? What we found out : Changes of musical theatre over time Japanese Musical Theatre Japanese musical theatre has different types . It has Noh , Kabuki , Kyogen anad Bunraku . They all are different in costumes and make up . But , they have one thing in common , which is their performances . They keep it very simple . Their performance is quite hard to catch up . The music that they use is quite fast . Music can change over time , so did their music too . Their music changed from instrumental to more of an electronic type of music . Some of them still use the instrumental version too . Chinese musical theatre The chinese theatre is mostly used for showing / presenting the history years ago . Their costume colors represent different meanings . Red means loyalty and honesty . Gold is used to tell about mythical heroes . For their presentation on performances or traditions , they keep it colorful . Because they want to represent the history or the colors that represent him/her . Now, traditional theatre are fused with modern theatre and cross-cultural theatre is formed and presented to let others learn about different cultures. Traditional Indonesian theatre The traditional Indonesian theatre is mostly used to tell history of Indonesia . The puppets are mostly used to tell Islamic tales while the leather ones are used to tell Hindu-based stories . One of the example of a Hindu story is Mahabharata . Islamic stories are mostly performed to tell stories about the history of what happened years ago when Dutch colonised the country . There are many reasons why wayang is used to be performed as Indonesia's main puppet show. Changes in theatre There are many changes in theatre . It all started from the pre-christian era where theatrical performances are more ritualistic and performed in the open with nature as the backdrop. Theatre then moved to an enclosed auditorium where tickets are sold. |
